President Nicolae Timofti attended a meeting of the National Council for Reforming the Law Enforcement Bodies today.
In his speech to the members of the Council, the president stressed the importance of the justice reform in the process of edifying a democratic state, in which human rights are observed.
President Nicolae Timofti formulated the priorities in carrying out the provisions of the Justice Sector Reform Strategy.
"My message as a president is that we have zero tolerance for corruption. The anti-corruption package of laws adopted in 2013 must be effectively implemented, the effects of which will be seen throughout our European course and in the daily lives of citizens.
“The Prosecution reform is another urgent necessity in terms of alignment to European standards, as well as due to the need to strengthen a link in the justice system. It would be great if the Prosecutor reform drafts would be completed and passed before the end of the current session of the parliament,” said Nicolae Timofti.
The president called for the effective implementation of the mechanism of turning judges more responsible.
"The government entirely fulfils its commitments to substantially finance the system. It is now the judges’ turn to prove professionalism and integrity in their work.
In the first part of 2014, it is imperative for the parliament to finish the adoption of the draft on the disciplinary liability of judges, approved by the Venice Commission.
The institutional capacities of the Superior Council of Magistracy must be strengthened, and its efficient and transparent activity ensured.
Nicolae Timofti welcomed the reform of the National Justice Institute: “A strategic objective is to provide the National Justice Institute with enough human, financial and material resources, to organise training activities in accordance with the highest standards of quality."
The president stressed that the pace in which the judicial reform would take place in the coming years depended on Moldova’s European agenda. "To this effect, we have a difficult and important mission. But our citizens deserve the effort. Being increasingly closer to Europe, we need to establish a fair, ethical, transparent justice system in our country. This is a bet we can win, for the benefit of the country and the people,” President Nicolae Timofti added.
