Presidency of the Republic of Moldova
Dear citizens,
We are closing a year that placed many challenges before us but also opened many new paths. Traditionally, as the year ends, we leave behind what we didn’t like and focus on our achievements and, above all, the hope that the future will be brighter. This year was no different. While navigating through challenging moments, we also managed as a nation to find joy and highlight the things we are proud of.
Even in the hardest times, we found space in our hearts for pride and gratitude for our country’s accomplishments. Together, we cherished every medal won by our Olympians and athletes, every success achieved by our pupils and students, every moment a doctor saved a life, and every instance a teacher recognised a student's potentia.l We celebrated our musicians, actors, painters, and writers. We honored the dedication of social workers, police officers, military personnel, public servants, and journalists who fulfilled their duties with integrity and honor.
At the same time, 2024 revealed the divisions that weaken us. We must not shy away from acknowledging this. Let us confront the wounds and not fear the difficult questions. Tonight, as the New Year approaches, let us look into the mirror—as a nation—and ask ourselves who we are. It is time for our country to embrace its reflection and begin to love what we see, with all our strengths and flaws. To truly love means not avoiding problems or denying their existence, but addressing them with care. It is only through love for our country that we can genuinely tackle the challenges, build bridges between one another, and work together.
We must not let our differences widen the gap between us. We can bridge this gap only by embracing our differences while understanding that we all want the same thing for our families and for all of Moldova. We all want to live in peace, to be healthy, to have better lives, and to leave a safe country with a promising future for our children. Most importantly, we must understand that every Moldovan plays a role in achieving this shared national goal.
Perfect countries don't exist—fairy-tale lands are only found in stories. But we know there are places where people live better lives, and we aim to follow their example. Together, we’ve chosen the path to the European Union, and we are moving forward on this journey. Now we have only two options: to stop and lament our fate because it’s too hard, because we give in to despair, OR to keep moving forward with our heads held high. The transition into the New Year is a good moment for us as a nation to reflect and answer a few key questions on this journey.
Can we stop feeling sorry for ourselves?
Can we stop blaming ourselves for the things that happen to us?
Can we stop doubting our own country?
I believe we can. And we have shown the whole world the strength of a united Moldova. But I am certain that to succeed, we need as many people as possible to share this belief. I urge you to see the start of the new year as a moment of unity for our nation.
Look at the people you are with this evening. The community around you is a reflection of our nation. These are people you love, respect, and trust—people you want to raise children with, build businesses with, and grow old alongside. These are the people with whom we want to build our country. Look at the people you are with now—you love them, with all their strengths and flaws, and you help them grow. Because with every individual triumph, we all succeed. And in our hardest moments, we can hold on to hope only if we have a point of support. The point of support for our country is its people. We are Moldova, and Moldova depends on our thoughts, actions, and daily decisions. Because we all rely on one another.
Dear Moldovans, no matter where you are in the world, let us welcome the New Year with trust in one another. Let us enter 2025 with the conviction that Moldova has a bright future, built by its honorable, hardworking, and compassionate people. Let us embrace one another with gratitude!
I thank you all, and I am proud to be your fellow citizen. I am proud of Moldova and of our people!
