President Maia Sandu marked the 30th anniversary of Moldova’s Gagauz autonomy with a message of unity and shared purpose, emphasising the deep bond between Moldovans and the Gagauz people. Established by law on 23 December 1994, the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia was created to protect and promote the community’s unique linguistic, cultural, and historical identity.
In her message, President Sandu highlighted the enduring ties between Moldovans and Gagauz, built on shared history, unity, and resilience. She underscored the importance of peace, mutual understanding, and safeguarding the well-being of all citizens, especially amid ongoing regional challenges.
The President warned against divisive political agendas that exploit the current situation for personal gain and reaffirmed that Moldova’s Parliament, Government, and Presidential Administration remain steadfast in supporting the Gagauz community, regardless of the stance of local authorities.
In a recent dialogue with members of the Gagauz community, held on the eve of the anniversary, President Sandu, alongside Speaker Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting cultural and linguistic programmes, improving communication between Chișinău and Comrat, and combating disinformation in the region. They emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts to preserve the Gagauz language, classified as endangered by UNESCO, while addressing shared economic and social challenges.
President Sandu also stressed that Moldova, Türkiye, and the European Union fund important infrastructure, education, and health projects in Gagauz-Yeri, directly improving people's lives and supporting the region’s sustainable development.
In closing, President Sandu emphasised unity: „Moldovans and Gagauz are one family. Regardless of politics or geopolitics, Moldova is our shared home”.
