Moldovan head of state meets Romanian president-elect

President Nicolae Timofti met Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, on a visit to Moldova, at the state residence today.

President Nicolae Timofti welcomed the decision by Mr Iohannis to visit Chisinau as the first destination abroad, after his election as president of Romania.

"Your visit to Chisinau is a strong signal of Romania’s support for the European project of our country and will boost the pro-European options of our citizens," said Nicolae Timofti.

For his part, Klaus Iohannis said: "I am here, in Chisinau, because I care about Moldova. The elections of 30 November are crucial for strengthening the European course of Moldova. I express solidarity with the political forces that will keep Moldova on its European path,” Klaus Iohannis said.

Nicolae Timofti and Klaus Iohannis advocated deepening special relations between Moldova and Romania and bringing citizens from both sides of the Prut River closer by means of political, economic and cultural contacts.

President Nicolae Timofti thanked Romania for the substantial aid offered to Moldova to modernise infrastructure and strengthen democratic institutions in the country. The president stressed the importance of continuing the works on the Iasi-Ungheni pipeline and other infrastructure projects, meant to connect Moldova to European energy, economic and trade systems.

At the same time, Nicolae Timofti informed the Romanian president about the conditions in which the electoral campaign for the parliamentary elections scheduled for 30 November were taking place.

Secretary General of the Presidential Office Ion Paduraru, Presidential Advisors Vlad Turcanu and Iulian Grigorita, Deputy Foreign and European Integration Minister Valeriu Chiveri, Romanian Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca, Romanian Senator Vasile Blaga, National Liberal Party (PNL) Co-Chairman Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu and PNL First Deputy Chairman Viorel Badea also attended the event.
