President Nicolae Timofti today received a delegation of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), led by Director General David Harris.
The participants in the meeting tacked aspects of the Moldovan-Israeli and Moldovan-American relations, as well as of Moldova’s European integration.
President Timofti welcomed the dynamic on the rise of the friendship and cooperation relations between Moldova and the American Jewish Committee, and thanked for the active role of this organization in promoting Moldova’s role in the state institutions of the United States.
The head of state said the desideratum of European integration was vital for Moldova, stressing that the latter was relying on the support provided by the United States and the Jewish people to this end.
In the context, David Harris said that “Moldova’s pro-European aspirations represent a priority for the AJC office from Brussels and the deepening of the Moldovan-American dialogue is on the agenda of the Washington-based office.”
Referring to the pogroms which took place in Chisinau in early 20th century, the Moldovan president described these deeds as blamable. “These events represented the result of provocative xenophobe policies, which did not depend on the inter-ethnic relations on the territory of Bessarabia. Since the Independence, we have been educating the society in the spirit of the European community, observance of the fundamental human rights. The Jewish community represents a successful example of ethnic integration in our country,” Timofti said.
In the end of the meeting, President Nicolae Timofti handed over the Order of Honour to David Harris, as a token of deep gratitude for his substantial contribution to the development and strengthening of the Moldovan-American friendship and cooperation relations.
